Downton Abbey Recap: Branson and Sybil are back, Edith wants to be a writer and everyone’s into the new footman

We’re almost halfway through the third season of Downton Abbey and, despite the warnings of those who downloaded it in the fall, things just keep getting better and better. This week we discover that Lord Grantham is just as useless as we’ve thought all along. (He’s still the best at becoming outraged over anything his daughters do, so perhaps he should consider a career in that?) Elsewhere, Anna worries that Bates is worried about her, Matthew worries about Lady Mary’s decision to wallpaper the nursery and Edith worries about having nothing to worry about. Whew! We cover all of this and more in our recap, so read on and don’t forget to enter our giveaway: you could win the complete third season of Downton Abbey on DVD!

Best reason to become a writer:
“Gardening? You can’t be that desperate.” –Granny to Edith, on her post-jilting hobby options.
Best reason to hire a footman:
Though everyone universally slams Ethel for being a prostitute, they’re more than happy to hire Freddy, the new footman, solely for his looks. After all, “We all need a little cheering up around here,” says Mary.

Serena, Blair, Chuck and Dan are going to Mexico! Watch the teaser trailer for Gossip Girl Acapuclo

If you’ve ever gone on a tropical vacation and fallen more in love with local TV shows than the beach, listen up: Mexico is producing a Spanish version of Gossip Girl. Dubbed Gossip Girl Acapulco, we were first delighted by the discovery of pictures of the cast and today our glee came full circle with the release of five minute teaser trailer for the show.
You don’t even need to speak Spanish to follow along, as Gossip Girl Acapulco seems to borrow its plot from the original. However, the streets of New York City have been replaced with beaches, palm trees and infinity pools, all the characters drive top-down BMWs and Gossip Girl herself has lost the blog and now relies on Twitter to spread salacious intel. (And uses some pretty good hashtags while doing so, like #KillMeNow and #LuckyBitch.)
While we’re pretty much hooked, the style on Gossip Girl Acapulco does leave us wanting more. Sofia (Serena) doesn’t have the same flowing hair and seems to only wear casual beach cover-up dresses. And there’s not even a single shot of Barbara (Blair) in the teaser! (Perhaps the costume department is still busy sourcing headbands?) We will give points to Max (Chuck), though, because he looks just as dapper as his New York counterpart with an extra dose of Nacho Figueras-esque polo player charm. Watch the full trailer below and let us know: are you excited for a full episode of Gossip Girl Acapulco to air?

Kate Middleton is ready for fall in rich jewel tones and black opaque tights

TAKE A CLOSER LOOK AT KATE MIDDLETON’S OUTFITS »
Gone are the topical accessoriesstrapless dresses and pastel colours she wore just weeks ago—Kate Middleton is completely ready for fall, and doing so with a range of rich jewel-toned outfits. Considering that she has a half-dozen appearances scheduled this week, over the coming days our Kate Middleton gallery is going to fill up with cold-weather-approved outfits. And while we can’t confirm that the Duchess has been reading our Fall/Winter 2012 trend guide, it’s worth pointing out that so far, she’s most definitely following our fashion forecast.
On Monday Kate Middleton and Prince William were at London’s Middle Temple—Will was actually given the title of Master of the Bench there in 2008, making him an honorary barrister of sorts. Unfortunately we didn’t get to see Prince William in a white powdered wig, as the purpose of this visit was to launch a new scholarship named for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and to meet with students who have received existing scholarships named for other members of the royal family, includingPrincess Diana. Kate marked the occasion in a burgundy double-breast jacket and skirt by French designer Paule Ka. The jacket featured peplum-esque detailing at the waist and the skirt hit quite a few inches above Kate Middleton’s knees—perhaps this was the reason she chose opaque black tights instead of her usual sheer ones. And, in keeping with the matching game, Kate wore black suede heels by Episode.
The black tights were back on today, when Kate Middleton toured the new St George’s Park soccer (er, football!) facility with Prince William. In a look that was very reminiscent of her per-engagement style, she also had on knee-high boots: a black suede pair from Aquatalia by Marvin K. Due to much of today’s appearance taking place outside, Kate accessorized her green Reiss Angel Fit and Flare coat with a crocodile-looking belt—also by the brand—giving it the appearance of a coat dress. (If you’re curious, that coat was first seen last Christmas, when Kate wore it to a private church service with the royal family.) And, in keeping with the green theme of the outfit, Kate wore her amethyst Kiki McDonough earrings.

TIFF 2012: Rachel McAdams and To the Wonder co-star Olga Kurylenko toast their latest film in matching green Elie Saab dresses

How could two green Elie Saab dresses wind up side by side on the TIFF red carpet? “It’s a complete coincidence,” Olga Kurylenko assured me at the TIFF after party for To The Wonder hosted by Hugo Boss and GQ and held at a condo development on Richmond St. West in Toronto earlier this week.
“I couldn’t believe it when I saw Rachel and we both realized we were wearing dresses Elie Saab.” Rachel would be Rachel McAdams, who stars with Olga Kurylenko (formerBond Girl and future apple of everyone’s eye) in the poetic and somewhat free-form film by Terrence Malick, which was screened last night at the Princess of Wales theatre. Kurylenko sparkled in emerald sequins, while McAdams worn a one-sleeve chiffon gown. If there was any doubt that emerald green is the colour of Fall 2012, there isn’t now.

Celebrities on New Year’s Eve 2013: What Carly Rae Jepsen, Kim Kardashian, Gwyneth Paltrow and more were wearing at midnight

2013 is finally upon us, and as many people are probably struggling to remember what they did for New Year’s Eve, the proof—for better or worse—is ready for a peek on social media. New Year’s Eve is often the best time to take a fashion risk, and many celebrities did just that. At the annual Dick Clark New Years Rockin’ Eve blowout celebration in New York’s Times Square, Taylor Swift updated the classic motorcycle jacket with the addition of red sequins as she performed a slew of her hits and planted a kiss on beau Harry Stiles of One Direction at the stroke of midnight. Yeah, we’re not above the swoon. Carly Rae Jepsen wore red as well, fashioned in a long and frilly ball skirt by Sachin + Babi (under which she adorably wore long johns) paired with black lace gloves, Madonna-style.
Newly announced parents-to-be Kim Kardashian and Kanye West got cozy at a party at 1OAK Nightclub in Las Vegas while showing no signs of shying away from their mutual love of fashion. In a sheer fishnet-like lace dress by Julien MacDonald, Kardashian paired her baby bump with several low-key braids. Yeezy opted to go without the Yeti mask, and went for a classic black and white suit.
Meanwhile, back in New York, Gwyneth Paltrow treated the Barclays Center in Brooklyn to the best New Year’s moment ever when she joined Jay-Z and her husband Chris Martin on-stage with daughter Apple for a shimmy while the two performed “Run This Town.”
